Chemical Peel Sydney

Chemical Peel Sydney

Chemical Peel Sydney

Our skin replaces old cells with new ones in a process called natural exfoliation – however with age this process slows down and it contributes to facial ageing.

A skin peel or chemical peel involves a chemical solution being applied to the skin causing the dead skin to slough off and eventually peel. These facials are typically used as anti-ageing treatments to rejuvenate the complexion. This is done by correcting skin texture irregularities and evening the skin tone.

The regenerated and resurfaced skin is smoother, with better texture and less lines than the old skin.

The benefits of a chemical peel include;

  • Clearer, younger-looking, more radiant skin,
  • Dull skin is revived,
  • More even skin texture and tone,
  • Appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is reduced,
  • Skin feels softer, smoother and more hydrated,
  • Pigmentation and the signs of sun damage are corrected,
  • Inflammation and breakouts caused by acne are reduced

Chemical peels have varying degrees of strength and use different acid types in their chemical solution. The least invasive peels also have the least risks and complications, but the most invasive peels have the greatest potential to improve. Some peels have zero downtime (light glycolic) , and others take up to 7 days to peel. It is advised that the patient has the treatment 2 weeks prior to any important social engagement.

Prepping the skin to receive a chemical peel can have a significant impact on the outcome and downtime following treatment. Sensitive skin types should speak with one of our cosmetic nurses to discuss pre-treatment protocol. The patient will be advised with what to prep the skin during the initial consultation. It may include AHA, salicylic acid, tretinoin or other retinoid.

Before and after care recommendations may vary depending upon the patient’s skin type and the chemical peel to be used.

The longevity of a chemical peel depends on your lifestyle, skincare routine, the skin’s individual response to the treatment, as well as your post-treatment care. Chemical peels penetrate deep into the skin and use strong acids to “burn” away skin.

Because of this process, chemical peels should not be repeated more than once every 4-6 months.
In general, the changes seen in a chemical peel will endure for 6 months to a year.

Procedure Information

What are the different types of peels?

There are several types of chemical peel techniques:

  • light and medium facial peels are used to remove superficial wrinkles and pigmentation.
  • deeper peels will be more aggressive at removing wrinkles and produce a more rejuvenating effect
  • However the deeper the chemical peel, the longer the recovery time required. After light facial peels, patients may return to their normal activities immediately and wear cosmetics to conceal the redness. Medium and deep chemical peels however, may result in swelling and light crusting of the skin, meaning more downtime followed by light shedding which can last up to 2 weeks.

Lactic, Glycolic and Salicylic Acid peels are most commonly used for skin rejuvenation.

  • AHA & BHA series of peels are best used if you have acne, pigmentary changes, moderate wrinkling, or sun damage. These produce noticeable results in the look and feel of your skin with absolutely no downtime.
  • Lactic acid stimulates the growth of new collagen and elastic fibres in the dermal layer of the skin, so that, over a period of time, the skin surface begins to look younger and smoother. The restoration of elasticity actually helps the disappearance of fine lines!
How much time does it take?

A peel takes approximately 30 minutes, and combined with a skin consultation allow at least  45 minutes of your time

Procedure FAQs

How much down time is associated with a peel?
  • In general the deeper the peel the more the down time
  • Lighter peels are not associated with any down time as the redness can be immediately covered with some make-up and you can return to normal activities.
  • Medium and deeper peels can produce light crusting as the outer skin layers shed and this can occur for 1 week
What do I need to do after chemical peels?
  • Following any skin peel, your new skin will be sensitive, so you must use maximum sun protection every day for two weeks.
  • Avoid any active ingredients such as Vitamin A/Retionl or AHA/BHA exfoilators at home for two weeks.
  • Avoid any laser, IPL, micro needling, or skin treatments two weeks after.
  • Peels act by loosening the cohesive glue-like adhesion of the cells in the outer five or six layers of the epidermis. As these outer layers begin to loosen and exfoliate – combination of routine and effective daily skin care is essential to produce healthier, more youthful skin cells to be produced.
  • Chemical peels can be repeated as necessary to achieve and maintain desired results.
How much do chemical peels cost?
  • Skin consultation with our practice nurse is free
  • Chemical peels vary in cost depending on the depth of the peel and the time taken to perform it.
