Our skin replaces old cells with new ones in a process called natural exfoliation – however with age this process slows down and it contributes to facial ageing.
A skin peel or chemical peel involves a chemical solution being applied to the skin causing the dead skin to slough off and eventually peel. These facials are typically used as anti-ageing treatments to rejuvenate the complexion. This is done by correcting skin texture irregularities and evening the skin tone.
The regenerated and resurfaced skin is smoother, with better texture and less lines than the old skin.
The benefits of a chemical peel include;
Chemical peels have varying degrees of strength and use different acid types in their chemical solution. The least invasive peels also have the least risks and complications, but the most invasive peels have the greatest potential to improve. Some peels have zero downtime (light glycolic) , and others take up to 7 days to peel. It is advised that the patient has the treatment 2 weeks prior to any important social engagement.
Prepping the skin to receive a chemical peel can have a significant impact on the outcome and downtime following treatment. Sensitive skin types should speak with one of our cosmetic nurses to discuss pre-treatment protocol. The patient will be advised with what to prep the skin during the initial consultation. It may include AHA, salicylic acid, tretinoin or other retinoid.
Before and after care recommendations may vary depending upon the patient’s skin type and the chemical peel to be used.
The longevity of a chemical peel depends on your lifestyle, skincare routine, the skin’s individual response to the treatment, as well as your post-treatment care. Chemical peels penetrate deep into the skin and use strong acids to “burn” away skin.
Because of this process, chemical peels should not be repeated more than once every 4-6 months.
In general, the changes seen in a chemical peel will endure for 6 months to a year.
There are several types of chemical peel techniques:
Lactic, Glycolic and Salicylic Acid peels are most commonly used for skin rejuvenation.
A peel takes approximately 30 minutes, and combined with a skin consultation allow at least 45 minutes of your time
