Louise has been diagnosed with left breast DCIS non-invasive or pre-invasive breast cancer, which means the cells that line the ducts have changed to cancer cells but haven’t spread through the walls of the ducts into the nearby breast tissue. Her right breast remains cancer free and there are no plans for a right mastectomy.
After a long discussion with Dr Aggarwal, Louise decided to undergo 2 stages breast reconstruction. With the insertion of a breast expander at the first stage. This was mainly due to the loss of a significant amount of skin on the left breast in order to remove her nipple. The second stage was after subsequent expansions and it involve exchange to a permanent silicone implant.
Louise is now almost 5 years after her reconstructive surgery, she feels much stronger and very proud of herself for getting through this as well as other stuff going on in her life. This part of the journey has really helped and sheβs looking at moving forward.
*Breast Reconstruction is considered as a reconstructive surgery and have associated Medicare item numbers listed in the MBS. This is not a cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery is the opposite of cosmetic surgery. It is focused totally on reconstructing the form of the body after trauma or defect. It can also include body enhancement procedures designed to correct or improve the bodyβs function or overall health.
