Dawn was diagnosed with left sided breast cancer but then subsequently was found to have bilateral breast cancer on breast MRI. During her treatemnet, Dawn went through a difficult period and suffered a serve skin reaction to chemotherapy which therefore had to be ceased only after the seocnd cycle. She had to undergo steroid treatment in order to control her severe skin reaction, caused by chemo.
Dawn decided to undergo skin sparing mastectomies and reconstruction with bilateral DIEP flaps from her own abdomen.
5 months after her surgery she already start progressing with her activities and feeling back to normal. She has lost 5kgs recently and feels fantastic.
Dawn is now 7 years after her reconstructive surgery and enjoying her life to fullest.
“Just remember that there can be a great life after cancer, and do make sure you reach out to people. People like me, and the people before me, want to help.” – Dawn
*Breast Reconstruction is considered reconstructive surgery and has associated Medicare item numbers listed in the MBS. This is not cosmetic surgery. It is focused totally on reconstructing the form of the body after trauma or defect – in this case on reconstructing the breast after cancer surgery. It can also include symmetrising or refinement procedures aimed at improving the results of the breast reconstruction performed.
